About Central American Free Software Summit

Welcome to another exciting Central American Free Software Summit a three-day activity that takes place annually in a country in the region that has been chosen by the Central American Free Software Community (Comunidad Software Libre Centroamérica, SLCA) starting with Nicaragua 2009. It is a space of articulation, coordination and exchange of ideas between Free Open source Software (FLOSS) communities where subjects covering society and technology can be discussed and brought to life in peer discussions, without being confined to any particular subject area. This make up the Central American Free Software Community agreements and strengthening ways of working together to facilitate and promote the use of Free Software development in the region. This year, the fifth Central American Free Software Summit will be held in the San Ignacio, Cayo, Belize.

About Free and open source software (FOSS)

Free and open source software (F/OSS, FOSS) or free/libre/open source software (FLOSS) is software that is both free (price) and open (freedom). It is liberally licensed to grant users the right to use, copy, study, change, and improve its design through the availability of its source code. This approach has gained both momentum and acceptance as the potential benefits have been increasingly recognized by both individuals and corporations

In the context of free and open-source software, free refers to the freedom to copy and re-use the software, rather than to the price of the software. The Free Software Foundation, an organization that advocates the free software model, suggests that, to understand the concept, one should "think of free as in free speech, not as in free beer".
